Representatives of the ten regions recognized as producers of Queijo Minas Artesanal received official copies of the certificate from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which recognizes the ways of making the product as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The tribute, promoted by the Government of Minas Gerais, through the State Secretariat of Culture and Tourism and the State Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage of Minas Gerais (Iepha-MG), marked the first meeting of producers after the international recognition granted in December 2024.

According to the Director of Promotion at Iepha-MG, Saulo Carrilho, the initiative aimed to bring the international recognition into the hands of those who preserve the centuries-old tradition of cheese production. “This is the same certificate delivered during the UNESCO convention that recognized the ways of making Queijo Minas Artesanal as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. We made copies to deliver to the producers, so they can take them to their cities and properties, strengthening the bond between this international recognition and those who have kept this tradition alive for generations,” he said.

Carrilho emphasized that the achievement was the result of a collective effort involving different institutions and the producers themselves, who are responsible for preserving knowledge passed down through generations.

“It was an action built together by various agencies and partners. The most important thing is that this recognition belongs to the producers. Many learned to make cheese from their parents, grandparents, and continue this legacy. Seeing the emotion of those who received the certificate shows the significance of this achievement for families and for Minas Gerais culture,” he said.

The UNESCO recognition represents a historic milestone for Brazilian culture. For the first time, the ways of making a food produced in the country became part of the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The title was granted during the 19th Session of the Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Heritage, held in Asunción, Paraguay.

Produced for about three centuries from raw milk, Queijo Minas Artesanal is part of the cultural identity of Minas Gerais and is present in 106 municipalities spread across ten officially characterized regions. Since 2008, its ways of making have been recognized as Cultural Heritage of Brazil by the National Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage (Iphan).

Document recognizing the ways of making Queijo Minas Artesanal as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity was delivered to representatives of the ten producing regions of Minas Gerais ExpoQueijo Brasil 2026 was the stage, on the afternoon of this Friday (26), for one of the most symbolic moments of the event’s program.
